If you arrive in Essaouira by bus, the first thing you'll probably notice is the city's picturesque seafront. You can walk along the seafront towards the center until you arrive at the famous port of Essaouira. On the seafront, there are various places to eat or drink something so you can relax after a long journey.
Continue walking towards the city center and head towards the port. The port of Essaouira is a lively spot in the city, where local fishermen unload the day's catch and repair traditional blue boats, called "chaland". Near the port, the Sqala du Port is an 18th-century fortification, built to protect the city from maritime attacks. From here, you enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the ocean, the port and the surrounding medina.
Essaouira features several historic entrance gates. If you arrive from the port, you will find Bab El Marsa, which leads to a square where you can get a first glimpse of the medina. Bab Sbaa, located towards the seafront, offers another picturesque access to the city. Across the harbor, there is also Bab Doukkala, a well-known gate that is a distinctive entrance to the old city.
Moulay Hassan Square is the beating heart of Essaouira, a lively public space that hosts markets, cafes and cultural events. In the center of the square there is an ancient clock, a symbol of the French colonial era and testimony to the history of the city. This European-style clock was installed during the French protectorate period.
Now walk inside the Medina. The medina of Essaouira, a UNESCO heritage site, is a fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleys, rich in history and culture. Characterized by its fortified walls, the medina is famous for its lively markets, called souks, where local crafts, spices and textiles are found. The blue and white painted houses give the medina a picturesque feel that I really appreciated. Walking through the medina is an immersive experience, which allows you to discover the historical and cultural heart of Essaouira.
In addition to trying the typical mint tea, I recommend you also try the sugar cane juice (extremely sweet but very good 😂). In the medina you will find several kiosks that prepare it. The city also offers many typical street food options, but it is always better to pay attention to the quality and freshness of what you eat!
Bayt Dakira is a museum located in the medina, dedicated to Moroccan-Jewish history and heritage. This symbolic place, whose name means "House of Memory," celebrates the historical coexistence between the city's Muslim and Jewish communities. Inside, you'll find a restored synagogue, historical documents, photographs, and objects that chronicle the rich cultural and religious heritage of Essaouira, a city that was home to one of Morocco's largest Jewish communities.
The Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah Museum, also located in the Medina, is the city's main museum, dedicated to local history and culture. Housed in an old 18th-century riad, the museum displays a vast collection of archaeological finds, traditional crafts, musical instruments and traditional clothing that tell the rich history of the region. The museum is named after Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah, the sultan who founded Essaouira in 1764.
Galerie La Kasbah is one of the most renowned art galleries in the city. Specializing in contemporary Moroccan art, the gallery displays works by local and international artists, ranging from painting to sculpture and photography.
In addition to surfing and windsurfing, Essaouira offers a wide range of activities for those seeking outdoor adventures. Among the most popular options is horse riding along Essaouira beach, where you can go horseback riding. For a more authentic experience, you can opt for a camel ride. Adrenaline lovers can instead choose a quad tour, exploring the sandy terrain and surrounding hills.
Essaouira is a city that combines history, culture and adventure into one fascinating package. From its windswept waterfronts and historic ports, to the rich cultural heritage of the medina and its museums, Essaouira offers something for every type of traveler. Whether you are a lover of water sports, a history buff, or simply looking for relaxation, this Moroccan city will surprise and fascinate you. Don't forget to explore its souks, savor the local food, and perhaps treat yourself to a horseback ride or a quad adventure among the coastal dunes 🌴☀️.
